Frequently Asked Questions.

What is a pelvic floor assessment?

A pelvic floor assessment is a specialized examination conducted to evaluate the strength, tone, and function of the muscles in the pelvic floor. This involves an external or internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles. During an internal assessment the healthcare provider will used a gloved and lubricated finger to assess the strength and tone of the muscles around the pelvic region. Pelvic floor assessments are recommended for individuals experiencing issues such as urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic pain or painful sex, difficulty with bowel movements, or following vaginal or cesarean birth.

I’m pregnant or planning conception- when is the best time for a pelvic floor assessment?

In an ideal circumstance, a pelvic floor assessment prior to pregnancy can give a baseline measurement and help to prevent issues that may arise in pregnancy and birth. Unless specified by a doctor otherwise, an internal pelvic floor assessment is safe at any stage of the pregnancy, but many people choose to attend around ~24 weeks. It is important to practice pelvic floor exercises that are individualised to your level of function: while some do need strengthening, many pregnant people actually need to practice the relaxation or letting go of their pelvic floor in preparation for birth. Internal assessment and release work are safe right up to full gestation, so it’s never too late to start!

I’m unsure about an internal assessment or internal pelvic release work, but it has been recommended.

Your informed consent is always the most important factor guiding management. That’s why I spend a lot of time explaining all of your options to help you feel empowered and safe in your pelvic health journey. There are always other ways to manage your pelvic health concerns - from external massage and body work, education, therapeutic yoga and exercise rehabilitation. So, if you don’t feel 100% on board, I encourage you to still attend and learn about the other modalities and treatment options available to you.

Can I still attend my appointment if I have my period?

Absolutely. Not all appointments involve internal assessment or treatment, and there are always other assessment and treatment options if you choose to decline internal work.
